What is the word “Ryugakusei”

Ryugakusei in Japanese means : “International students who study in Japan”. I met many international students in Japan, and I asked them about what they were doing in Japan.  Here is what they told me they said they are Ryugakusei. I first heard Ryugakusei I was confused because I didn’t know the meaning of this word Ryugakusei. When I ask my wife about this Japanese word Ryugakusei. This is what she told me. Ryugakusei in English means study abroad or International students who study in Japan. Anyway if you are a foreigner out there who will come  to do your studies in Japan, they will call you Ryugakusei in Japan, because you were from overseas and you come over to do your studies in  Japan. Even if you go to university, college or Japanese language school, you will be called “Ryugakusei.”
